Kanye Beats 50 Cent in Sales Publicity Stunt

Posted September 23, 2007 by Margie Zable Fisher

I’ve actually been watching this with interest. It’s a great publicity stunt. My question: Will 50 Cent keep his promise?

(New York) — The battle is over: Kanye wins.

According to Nielsen Soundscan, Kanye West sold 957,000 copies of his “Graduation” album, versus 691,000 copies of 50 Cent’s “Curtis” album.

West told a crowd at the GQ 50th anniversary party in New York, “To be a champion, you’ve got to take out a champion.” “Graduation” is the best-selling debut of the year, beating out Linkin Park’s “Minutes to Midnight” album, which sold 623,000 copies when it debuted in May.

50 Cent says in a statement he’s excited to have participated in one of the biggest album releases in the last two years and he calls the past week “a great moment for hip-hop music.” He doesn’t mention whether he’ll make good on his promise to stop making solo albums if West outsold him in the first week. Contrary to some reports, 50 didn’t say he’d retire from music.

The quote he gave the website www.SOHH.com that started all this was, “If Kanye West sells more records than 50 Cent on September 11th, I’ll no longer write music. I’ll write music and work with my other artists, but I won’t put out anymore solo albums.”
