College Unsure if Donor Should Be Profiting by Using Its Name
Posted April 26, 2007 by Margie Zable FisherThis morning’s Palm Beach Post included a front-page Business Section article on well-known Boca Raton, FL insurance salesman Barry Kaye.
Even I was surprised to hear that Kaye has given $20 million to Florida Atlantic University (my MBA alma mater), although they did name the College of Business after him.
Now the university isn’t sure whether or not it’s okay for Kaye to use the honorary doctorate and FAU logo in his advertising. The full story is here: http://www.palmbeachpost.com/localnews/content/local_news/epaper/2007/04/26/m1a_FAUKAYE_0425.html
Feel free to come to your own conclusions, but here are mine. If someone gives you $20 million, and his name is on your College of Business, then it’s okay for him to call himself Dr. Barry Kaye and include your logo. The college accepted his money. Now it’s payback time.
Yes, I think he should be able to use his affiliation with the school. If the university has a problem with this, next time someone comes with a big check they should present them with a contract that spells out what they can and can’t do….but for this guy, they should either shut up or give him the money back.
