The Power of a Surprise

This past Sunday my friends Suzy, Paula and Lori surprised me by kidnapping me for a day at a spa for my 40th birthday.

I was totally surprised and obviously thrilled. While a day at the spa is always a treat, being surprised by friends made the experience much more exciting.

I was thinking about that this morning as I was working, and realized that (nice) surprises are very powerful in business, too.

Here are some nice business surprises I’ve gotten:

A referral from an unexpected source (a very large, well-known Public Relations agency)
A compliment about my newsletter from someone I thought was too busy and successful to read it
An unexpected discount on products at a local store for my birthday month

Consider making someone’s day by giving them an unexpected and pleasant business surprise. And maybe you’ll be rewarded in the same way!
