Splendid Splenda

Posted November 1, 2006 by Margie Zable Fisher

Yesterday David and I went to lunch at a local restaurant.  This restaurant is part of a large chain of “nice” restaurants.  When I went to put some Splenda in my iced tea, there was every other option, but not Splenda.  I grumpily put something else in my iced tea.

When the waitress returned, David asked for Splenda.  “Sure,” she said. “We keep it in the back office.”

I was mystified.  First, I never thought to ask for Splenda.  But David said he has had to do that before, at another restaurant in this chain.  I asked the waitress later why the Splenda was in the back and not on the table, but she didn’t know why.

My guess is that Splenda is expensive and the financial folks at this chain didn’t want people to put some of those packets in their pockets and purses.  Even if that’s not the reason, it is still annoying to do this to clients.  Heck, I can even get Splenda in my local Einstein’s bagel!

This is not the only annoying thing that this chain does, but it annoyed me enough that I wrote about it.  And I’m bothered enough that I might not go back for a while, or ever.

P.R. Moral - Everything, even the sweetener options you offer, is part of the P.R. impression you’re making.

Yours in Success,
